A Little History on United Consumers Credit Union

This non-profit credit union was started in 1941, just a few years after the average CU out there was chartered. Today, their assets exceed $185 million and you can access cash from this CU at over 35,000 surcharge-free ATMs nationwide because of their involvement in the CO-OP and Alliance One ATM networks.

Do they give back at all?

United Consumers Credit Union does give back to the community, yes. They are involved with supporting a lot of different organizations out there. Some of those include the Buckle Up, Phone Down initiative, the Northwest Communities Development Corporation, their own scholarship program, and more.

Membership Requirements

If you want to become a United Consumers Credit Union member, you will need to meet some requirements. There are a few ways to get in besides where you work or live, which is good.

If you live in Jackson, Buchanan, Cass, and Clay Counties or the city of Cameron, Missouri, then you’re in. If you live, work or worship in Johnson County, Kansas, then you’re in, too. Immediate family connections can also get you as well.

Products at United Consumers Credit Union

UCCU has both personal products and business products. One thing that I did notice right away, though, was that they don’t appear to have business loans.

It just looks like there are business checking and savings accounts on their menu, so, there are better credit unions out there if your business will need accounts and loan products. I also searched their website for business loans and could not find anything.

As far as personal products go, they do have very solid offerings there. You can choose from various premium Kasasa checking accounts as well as their own in-house checking account options.

“Kasasa” is a third-party financial company that local banks and credit unions use to help them development appealing products for customers. They offer more interesting rewards than you might find with the average credit union’s in-house checking account.

There are also extensive savings products, like Share Savings, Money Market Accounts, CDs, Club Accounts, Youth Savings and IRAs.

Loan products at United Consumers Credit Union include the basics, home equity loans, auto loans, mortgages, personal term loans, personal lines of credit, credit cards, and holiday loans.

United Consumers Credit Union – Final Thoughts

UCCU is a good looking small to mid-size credit union for personal products. It’s available to Missouri and Kansas residents plus others who qualify through various organizations. There are other ones out there that are a better fit for businesses that need financing options, although they do carry basic checking and savings account products if your small business will never need loans. United Consumers Credit Union also has a great website with accessibility features for people with disabilities and they do a lot to give back to the community.
