A Little BluCurrent History

Like many credit unions out there, BluCurrent started around the time of the great depression. They were originally called Springfield Postal Employees Credit Union in 1929 when they opened. Today, they have over $260 million in assets and you can get your cash in nearly 30,000 surcharge-free locations thanks to them being part of the CO-OP ATM network. Their name has been BluCurrent since 2011.

Do They Give Back At All?

Their way of giving back is a spin on the idea of doing random acts of kindness. They go around town and literally do randomly kind things, like paying wedding bills for couples or dropping off cupcakes for employees at the YMCA. This is definitely the most unique way of giving back that I’ve seen at a credit union before.

Membership Requirements to Join

If you want to join Blucurrent credit union, then you’ll need to meet some requirements. Eligibility will either depend on where you live, work, or whether your family has eligibility.

Members of these Southwest Missouri counties are eligible to join: Christian, Greene, Howell, Jasper, Lawrence, Newton, Polk, Stone, Taney, and Webster.

If you’ve been employed by either Abel Body Company, Don’s Machine Shop, Eagle Picher, or Fibrex, you’re in.

There are also a handful of other ways that you can check out on their site here.

Products at BluCurrent Credit Union

You’ll be able to find all of the usual banking products in their selection here. That includes both personal and business products.

Personal includes checking, savings, money markets, certificates of deposit, IRAs, and kids accounts. There are also auto, home, and home equity loans. If you need debit, credit, or reloadable cards, then Blucurrent has you covered for those, too.

They also have mobile wallet services and various investment services. Their investment services cover things like annuities, life/health insurance, BKS balanced index accounts, and retirement planning.

For your business, there are loans, checking, debit cards, credit cards, CDs, and Money Market accounts.

Personal Checking Accounts

There are three main personal checking accounts, which is about average for a credit union. Especially one that’s in the small to mid-size range like Blucurrent is. There’s Basic Checking, which is their account with no minimum balance, $0/month, free e-statements and a free debit card.

Their ePerks Checking account is also $0/month with unlimited nationwide ATM fee refunds (very unique, but not sure how often you’ll need that). Then, it also offers credits for either Amazon, Disney +, Hulu, iTunes, or Netflix up to $5/month, which is nice. Who doesn’t have at least one streaming service these days? I know that would benefit me if I joined Blucurrent.

There’s a $15 signup bonus, no minimum balance, free eStatements and a free debit card. Check out the disclosures for that account here.

Their prosper checking account at Blucurrent is where you can make the big money.

This account also has the unlimited nationwide ATM fee refunds, but, the big thing is the high interest dividend rate of 2.50% APY on balances up to $7500 and the 2.50% – .22% APY on balances over $7,500. Check out the disclosures for that here.

Also, there’s no minimum balance, free eStatements, and free debit cards.

Blucurrent Credit Union – Final Thoughts

Blucurrent looks like a solid credit union in Southwest Missouri. The way that they give back to the community is pretty unique and keeps things interesting. They also have all of the products that you would find anywhere else. The only thing missing is regular car or home insurance products, however, almost every credit union I’ve seen offering those things tends to do it in partnership with an external agency so it’s not really their product anyhow. Overall, this is a great looking non-profit financial institution. Do you have a review on Blucurrent? Share it with our readers below.
