It’s tough not to like a place that does a nice spin on the name like that. “Westconsin” just sounds fun to say, like “Minnesnowta.”

History
Quite a few credit unions around the U.S. were started during the 1930s. This Wisconsin CU was started toward the end in 1939.
Originally started for farmers in Menomonie, WI, they steadily grew over the years through different mergers and changed their name to Westconsin Credit Union about 30 years ago.
Member Eligibility at Westconsin Credit Union
You will need to either live or work within their field of membership if you want to join WCU. Certain residents of Wisconsin and Minnesota are eligible to join.
In Wisconsin, people in Barron, Buffalo, Burnett, Chippewa, Clark, Dunn, Eau Claire, Jackson, Pepin, Pierce, Polk, Rusk, St. Croix, Sawyer, Taylor, Trempealeau and Washburn counties are eligible.
In Minnesota, you’re in if you operate in Anoka, Chisago, Dakota, Goodhue, Isanti, Pine, Ramsey, Wabasha and Washington counties.
Go to a university or technical college in those places? You’re in. Same as if you work at one. Family can also be a door-opener, so, ask your mom, dad, or siblings if they belong here (assuming you can’t get in another way).
On top of those, there are even more ways you can be eligible. Check those out here.
Products
You can choose from a handful of different products at Westconsin Credit Union. Those include personal ones like checking accounts and a variety of savings options.
They have personal savings accounts, share certificates, money market accounts, IRAs and HSAs, so, you’ll be covered for options there.
They offer four types of checking accounts. You can choose from Free Checking, Preferred Checking, Money Market Checking, and Foundations checking since they want to give you plenty of options.
That Free Checking looks pretty good because you can join without much money. There’s no minimum balance or monthly charges, so, no need to worry about it being drained from fees.
If you want to step things up, look no further than their Preferred Checking. It seems a little confusing to me that the account is listed as $7 per month but then says it’s discounted to $4 per month.
More Details On Westconsin Credit Union’s Preferred Checking
All monthly fees aside – this account comes with some great benefits. You will earn dividends on all balances – that’s not something that every credit union offers.
Many that I write about have thresholds, so, you need to hit a certain amount of money before the dividends roll in. As of this writing, the dividend rate and APY is .10% on that Preferred Checking account.
Their Membership Savings is .25% APY/Dividend rate with a $5 opening deposit.
Business Accounts and Services
If you run a small business, then there are a few different financial products at Westconsin Credit Union that can probably meet your needs.
Something that I really like about this credit union is how they specifically name the types of businesses that they work with. 97% of the CU’s I’ve written about just saw “business” or “small business” without defining anything.
You can work with WCU is you’re a Sole Proprietor with no employees. All you need to give them in that case is your social security number.
You can work with them as a Sole Proprietor with one or more workers on your payroll. They even work with unincorporated organizations.
Then, as expected, they also work with the businesses you’d assume they would, like General Partnerships, LLC’s, LLP’s, Limited Partnerships, and Corporations.
There’s also Wisconsin Non-stock corporations and Minnesota Non-profit corporations.
Westconsin Credit Union – Final Thoughts
Besides its name being so much fun to say, Westconsin Credit Union also has a great suite of products. They have an even better website, that actually outlines really important information about their offerings that a lot of other CU’s usually don’t online.
