Valley Communities Credit Union History
The history of VCC is similar to many other credit unions. Born out of distrust in the security of our financial system (I assume, but they don’t explicitly say that) in the 1930’s, this CU was formed in 1935 as the Mosinee Paper Credit Union.
Since then, they’ve had a handful of mergers and acquisitions to grow to a nice size and reach. I really like how detailed their history is here, too. You don’t get that with every credit union.
According to their website, this CU originally operated from the punch house at the Paper Mill, sometimes using scraps of paper to do business if nothing else was available. We definitely take our electronics for granted these days! Hard to imagine if things went back to all paper.
Membership Requirements
If you want to become a member at Valley Communities Credit Union, you will need to meet some requirements. This one’s pretty simple and straightforward, which is good. Anyone who lives, works, or owns property in Adams, Clark, Juneau, Lincoln, Marathon, Portage, Shawano, Waupaca, Waushara, or Wood counties is eligible to join.
You’ll also need to open a savings account with a minimum balance of $25.00, which is a little bit higher than the average credit union. Most places are just a $5.00 minimum.
Products at Valley Communities Credit Union
You can choose from a full selection of products at VCCU that you would normally find at any bigger bank. Those include a couple different checking accounts, like their Free Kasasa Cash Checking, Free Kasasa Cash Back Checking, Free Checking, Classic Checking and Debit Cards.
I’m a little surprised that there’s three different free checking accounts but hey, that’s some solid variety if I’ve ever seen it. You can also choose from a lot of different savings accounts.
There’s the Free Kasasa Saver, Share Savings, High Yield Shares, Money Market, Share Certificate, Escrow, Christmas Club, Youth Savings, HSA and IRA account options. That’s definitely more than the average bank or credit union (big or small) in terms of offerings.
You can choose from a bunch of different loan options, like home mortgage, auto, secured, unsecured, and even student loans. There are also credit cards here. Even some insurance offerings!
Business Offerings
You can also get different business offerings at Valley Communities Credit Union. Those include business checking, business debit cards, and different business loans.
Their business loans can cover a handful of different purchases, like equipment, machinery, inventory, working capital, and facility improvements. You can also get commercial real estate loans.
Valley Communities Credit Union Account Services
There are a number of account services, too, which you won’t always find at a smaller credit union. These are things like their NetBranch/Online Banking Services, Mobiliti Mobile Banking, E-Statements, CardSecur, Credit Sense, Overdraft Protection, Surcharge-Free ATMs, and a handful of other things.

How Valley Communities Credit Union Gives Back
Between volunteering and making financial contributions to the community, the VCCU team does give back a lot. Their website mentions giving back by volunteering at local schools, taking part in community programs, and being heavily involved with the charity Credit Unions for Kids that supports the local Children’s Miracle Network.
Final Thoughts on VCCU
Valley Communities Credit Union looks like a great local credit union. If you fall into their field of membership and you’re in the market to put your money somewhere new, they are absolutely worth looking into.
They seem to offer a lot more than the average smaller credit union does in terms of accounts and their loan + dividend rates are also pretty good, too. Do you have a review on them that you want to add? Let us know here and we’ll add it in.
