A Little History
SCCU has a similar background to the majority of other credit unions. They were started in the early 1930’s when the State of Wisconsin granted a charter to organize SCCU.
It didn’t say on their site if it was originally organized for a group of employees or anything. A lot of credit unions at one time were just meant for one employee group or something like a union because they couldn’t put their faith in regular banks.
Be glad for the time we live in, things were a lot tougher 100 years ago!
Membership Eligibility At Superior Choice Credit Union
There are a few requirements that you’ll need to meet to join SCCU. First and foremost, you need to open an account with a valid photo ID showing your current address and $5 to start your membership savings account.
It may not say this on every Wisconsin CU’s member eligibility pages, but, most other ones have the same requirements. Both the initial deposit and $5 to start is pretty common.
Members of Wisconsin and some members of Minnesota are eligible to join, so you can live in either state.
The specific counties you can be working or living in for Wisconsin to become a member of Superior Choice Credit Union are Ashland, Barron, Bayfield, Burnett, Clark, Chippewa, Douglas, Iron, Rusk, Sawyer, Taylor, and Washburn counties.
In Minnesota, you can be in Carlton, Itasca, or St. Louis counties. There are also a few additional ways in that you can check out here.
Products at Superior Choice Credit Union
There are a variety of checking services at SCCU. That’s nice to see this kind of variety at a slightly smaller credit union.
They can offer you Simple Checking, AMP Checking, Cash Back Checking, Teen Checking, or the Round-Up Checking account.
When it comes to savings accounts, they have Membership Savings, Christmas Club Savings, Share Certificates, Money Market Accounts, IRA Savings/Certificates and Health Savings Accounts (HSAs).
If you need a loan, they offer Auto Loans, Unsecured Loans, Recreational Loans, Protection Services, Student Loans, and something called “Good Money Micro Loans.”
Unfortunately, I got a 404 error page when trying to dig into what a Good Money Micro Loan was. They were probably just updating their website.
Mortgage Products
They have a few mortgage products for you to choose from at Superior Choice Credit Union. Those include things like fixed rate financing, adjustable rate mortgages, construction loans, home equity lines of credit, second mortgages, manufactured homes, and leased land loans.
On adjustable rate mortgages, the interest rate is fixed for 60, 84, or 120 months. Your interest rate can change yearly after the first 60, 84, or 120 months, so, be aware of that. Interest rates can’t increase or decrease more than 2% per year, either.
They also notify you in writing 30 days before a rate change takes effect, which I like to see a place do.
Small Business Products
If you run a small business, there are some products you’ll like at Superior Choice Credit Union. Their Business Checking has free debit cards, no-fee ATMs, and free online banking.
Their Choice Plus Money Market account has yields on the minimum balance ($5000) of .35% APY and a dividend rate of .35% at the time of this writing.
You can get agricultural loans, business credit cards, single payment loans, lines of credit, commercial real estate financing and term loans, too.
How They Give Back at Superior Choice Credit Union
There are well over 40 different organizations listed on their website that Superior Choice Credit Union supports. Those include small community orgs all the way up to big ones like Make A Wish Foundation and the Salvation Army.
SCCU – Final Thoughts
SCCU is a solid looking credit union that you can go to for reliable services. They’re pretty competitive with other ones out there when it comes to APY and loan products.
Giving back is also an important aspect of the way they do business. Check out SCCU at https://www.superiorchoice.com/ if you’re in their area of eligibility and you’re shopping around.
