Some History
Check Your Personal Loan Rate with SoFi
This credit union has a similar backstory to many others out there. It’s a little bit younger than the average one I usually research, but, it still has a lot of history behind it.
I see a lot of early-30s founding dates out there. RCU was started in 1964, so, juuuust a few years after the depression.
The way it was founded is the same story. A group of employees at a company (Uniroyal Tire company in this case) got together and wanted to form a financial institution that was reliable.
What resulted was Royal Credit Union, which serves over 200,000 members today.
Membership Eligibility
You will need to live or work in one of the counties they serve. There are a lot of them, so, chances are most Minnesota and Wisconsin residents are eligible.
If you’re in Minnesota, these counties qualify: Anoka, Carver, Chisago, Dakota, Goodhue, Hennepin, Isanti, Olmsted, Pine, Ramsey, Scott, Sherburne, Wabasha, Washington, Winona, or Wright.
If you’re in Wisconsin, these next counties are where you need to be. People in Adams, Ashland, Barron, Bayfield, Burnett, Buffalo, Chippewa, Clark, Douglas, Dunn, Eau Claire, Jackson, Lincoln, Marathon, Pepin, Pierce, Portage, Polk, Price, Rusk, Sawyer, St. Croix, Taylor, Trempealeau, Washburn, or Wood can join Royal Credit Union.
Even if you don’t live near those places, you still have options. Family connections can get you in. By extension, if your immediate family members are eligible to join or are already members, you can join, too.
There are a lot more ways into this Wisconsin CU listed here.
Royal Credit Union Products
You can choose from a lot of different financial products here. They offer a handful of personal and business banking options.
In the way of personal products, you can choose from a variety of checking and savings options, so, there’s probably something that works for you.
There’s also plenty of loan/credit product options, so, your major purchases are covered. Want to retire some day? They have options for that, too.
RCU can handle Certificates, IRAs, and Financial Planning Resources for you.
Business Banking At Royal Credit Union
There are a lot more business banking products here than I’ve seen elsewhere. That’s a good thing, just more options for you. They have standard checking and savings, so, you can manage your business’s money efficiently.
Royal Credit Union has seven major loan and credit products. The most common one they probably deal with is their small business loan.
After that, there’s an interesting one that I noticed: they have something called startup & business expansion loans. I think that’s pretty neat. A lot of the credit unions I’ve written about haven’t mentioned things like startups directly.
In addition to those products, you can get investment property/commercial real estate loans, construction loans, business lines of credit, capital/term loans, and business credit cards.
Cash Management At Royal Credit Union
Their cash management services are competitive with big banks/other reputable credit unions. Those include things like online/mobile banking, desktop deposit capture, online wires and ACH services.
You can also get payroll services, bill pay, and merchant payment process handled here. I know that not every credit union out there does payment processing, so that’s pretty cool. It should be noted, though, that it’s just a partnership with a payment processor called Wind River Financial.
Royal Credit Union – Final Thoughts
Royal Credit Union is a solid looking CU that many residents of Minnesota and Wisconsin can use. As I said, even if you don’t live in one of those places, there are still ways to get in.
They offer a ton of different financial products and services, so, whatever your needs are, you can probably find something that fits them. Check out RCU at https://www.rcu.org/.
