A Little History on Them
Heritage Credit Union is a little bit unique since their history is tied to an extremely iconic brand. It was started around the same time many other credit unions were, the early 1930’s.
Originally, Oscar Mayer’s son-in-law started lending out money to employees of the young meat company. Soon, though, the Wisconsin CU was actually incorporated in 1934.
I also learned about something called “Wiener Whistles” from researching this. Definitely interesting, I’ll say that.
Since then, they’ve grown to have over 30,000 members in two different states. Their assets exceed $450 million and they employ over 120 people.
Membership Eligibility at Heritage Credit Union
There are a couple different ways that you can get into HCU. You get to stay a member regardless of where you live, so even if you move, you’ll be in good shape.
Since the main office is located in Wisconsin, that’s where most of the eligible counties are. You can be living or working in Barron, Chippewa, Columbia, Dane, Dodge, Iowa, Lincoln, Milwaukee, Oneida, Ozaukee, Price, Racine, Rusk, Sauk, Taylor, Washington or Waukesha, or within 25 miles of Sheldon or 15 miles of Chetek, Wisconsin.
Their other place of eligibility for Heritage Credit Union is Illinois, so, you can either live in Boone, Jo Daviess, Knox, Lake, McHenry, Stephenson, Warren or Winnebago county there.
Additionally, you can be an employee of Kraft (owns Oscar Mayer now) or Bombardier Company + its subsidiaries. People who work at Rockwell Automation and a few other places listed on their website.
Products That They Offer
They mainly offer personal products, although there are some small business offerings, too. In the way of personal, you can choose from three different checking accounts. Those are Simply Free Checking, Save More Checking, and Dividend Checking. I like the variety in that.
There’s also overdraft protection and debit cards. In addition to checking options, there are savings accounts, too. You can choose from Primary Savings, Simply Save Accounts, Save More Savings, and also ones with extras like their Saver’s Sweepstakes.
The sweepstake account automatically enters people into monthly and quarterly cash prize drawings. There’s also an annual drawing of $5,000 you can get entered into, so, there’s some big money on the line. On top of that, this particular account has no monthly or maintenance fees and a dividend rate of .10% APY* at the time of this writing.
Heritage Credit Union also offers Certificates, Money Market Accounts, and IRAs. You can find a few different credit cards there, like Visa Signature, Platinum Low Rate, and Platinum Secured cards. There are no-fee balance transfers and you can manage your card on the HCU website.
Mortgages at Heritage Credit Union
They have home loans, mortgage refinancing, resources for first-time home buyers and also calculators to help figure everything out.
Their featured mortgage rates can range from 2.250% APR on a 10-year fixed to 3.181% APR* on a 30-year fixed.
How They Give Back
Heritage Credit Union gives back through their Richard J. McGrath Endowment Fund. It supports local social organizations every year.
Heritage Credit Union – Final Thoughts
Heritage is a little smaller than other CU’s around Wisconsin by comparison, but not that much smaller. With a sizable amount of assets and a competitive number of personal products, they are a great looking credit union to work with. Plus, going with them means you’re in the same place as a lot of the people who make Oscar Mayer Wieners and a handful of other products.
